London, George Harrap and Co., 1910.
Willy Pogány, (1882-1955) renowned Hungarian book illustrator, was a master of dreamy and warm pastel scenes through water-colours, oil paintings and especially pen and ink. Painstakingly detailed and confident, Pogány's drawings portray the true extent of his talent. The Ancient Mariner is recognised as his masterpiece.
From 1924 Pogány worked as an art director on several Hollywood films including Fashions of 1934 and Dames. He painted for the Barrymore family, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Carole Lombard, Enrico Caruso and many more.
First trade edition with Pogany's illustrations; large 4to, (330 x 254 mms); illustrated endpapers, richly decorated, half-title & title-page with gilt highlights, twenty tipped-in colour plates, calligraphic text, 10 illustrations in line with colour backgrounds, 6 with colour borders, 22 decorations in 2 colours, 30 vignettes, minor spotting to prelims; original suede binding and therefore scarce, yapp edges, elaborately decorated pictorial board with lettering in gilt, VG despite fading and some minor loss to extremities, crinkled yapp edges, otherwise a very good example.
