A finely bound copy of this account of the American Civil War by William Howard Russell (1827-1907), the first modern war correspondent, which provides a valuable record of the War as seen from an outside perspective.

Russell also spent 22 months covering the Crimean War, including the Siege of Sevastopol and the Charge of the Light Brigade, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and the Franco-Prussian War.

First edition; 2 vols, 8vo (19.5 x 13 cm); lacking the map, armorial bookplates to pastedowns; contemporary half blue calf, marbled boards, spine gilt in six compartments with contrasting gilt morocco lettering pieces, all edges marbled, a fine copy; xvi, 424; xi, 442 pp.
