Ernestine Isabella Sartorius (1846-1927) joined her husband in Cairo in 1883 and travelled to a base in Suakin in the Sudan. Along with her step-daughter Ernestine looked after the house of the businessman who sheltered them, and recounts the town and its people before General Sartorius was defeated in battle and they had to beat a hasty retreat to Cairo.
First edition; 8vo (22 x 15 cm); 11 plates including frontispiece, discreet shelf stamp to front pastedown; contemporary half red calf, marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt in six compartments, all edges speckled red, a very good copy; x, [i], 259 pp.
