One of the rarest and most-desirable plate-books of the early 20th century housing 55 incunable leaves, all with woodcut illustrations, and including 20 leaves in hand-colour.Highlights include hand-coloured plates from von Kaub's herbal Gart de Desundheit c.1499 depicting wall germander, the martyrdom of St Mark from the 1488 edition of Der Heiligen Leben, and city-scapes from the German-language edition of Schedel's Nuremberg Chronicles.
Limited edition number 17 of 100 copies, and one of 50 issued with the English text-book; large folio (50 x 38.5 cm); text of incunable leaves in German and Latin, each with woodcut illustrations or ornaments, 20 with hand colour, a few examples with rubrication in red or blue ink, accompanying illustrated text-book in English numbered in pen to limitation-page, publisher's cream wrappers, a little spotted, spine split at binding cords, incunable leaves tipped-in to mounts with title labels, occasional toning, all housed in the publisher's buckram clamshell box, lettered in black to upper cover.
