Inscription reads "To the Countess of Westmoreland from the author."This guide was originally published by John Murray who started to published his own guides in the 1830s. Starke was a well known traveller and author and her guides were popular with the nineteenth century traveller before the age of railways. She was one of the first to recognise that practical information should be included in guide books and many consider her to be the pioneer of the modern day travel guide. Her last travel guide was published in 1839.
Fifth edition.; 8vo (21 x 13.5 cm); presentation inscription to title, lacks the engraving of the Forum Romanum as usual, uncut; rebacked with original publisher's brown boards; a very good copy; 604pp.
