The Badminton series was conceived by Longmans, Green & Co. and edited by Henry Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort (1824–1899) as 'a modern encyclopaedia to which the inexperienced man, who seeks guidance in the practice of the various British Sports and Pastimes, can turn to for information' (Preface).
