prayers from the mother of the Carmelites

The true origins of the Carmelites are uncertain, however it is believed that they were a medicant order in the Catholic Church that were likely founded in the 12th century on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582 AD), known as the 'Mother of the Carmelites', was a Spanish mystic and reformer who founded the Discalced Carmelite religious order, dedicated to a rigourous life of prayer, poverty, and cloistered living. Inspired by her reform, Carmelite nuns and missionaries established convents in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine as early as the 17th century, fostering contemplative life, religious education, and a European cultural presence among local Christian communities.

Scarce. No comparative manuscripts of this text have been located in Arabic translation.

Single volume, decorated manuscript on ruled paper (partial appearance of what appears to be a triple crescent moon watermark), in Arabic, 34 leaves, complete, 158 x 109 mm; single column, 12 lines informal black freehand, verging on naskh, headings in red, some divisions and diacritics also marked in red, catch words, internally very clean and crisp condition; contemporary red morocco, ruled in blind with centrally stamped medallions and decorative tooling also in blind, doubleurs of brocade paper printed in gilt (European), upper hinge a little split, spine end very slightly rubbed, a few light scuffs, overall a very attractive volume.

Provenance
