BLOOMFIELD, Robert
The Farmer's Boy
The Farmer's Boy
Stock Code 124092
London, Sampson Low, Son & Co., 1858.
Born in Suffolk as a farm labourer before moving to London and becoming a shoemaker, Bloomfield learned to compose poetry in the back streets of the East End. Once a popular and widely read poet, Bloomfield has since disappeared from general awareness, but this text remains a compelling example of labouring-class poetry.
8vo (20 x 13.5); gift inscription in pen to front pastedown, bookseller's stamp to top right corner, mild spotting to prelims, 30 in-text illustrations in black and white throughout; red gilt-panelled morocco, triple gilt fillet border, spine tooled and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, spine slightly faded, wear to extremities, particularly the edges, remnants of marker ribbon; 68 pp.
