dutch east indies qur'an in translation

Dutch translation of the Qur'an printed in the capital city of the Dutch East Indies

Ludovicus Jacobus Antonius Tollens (1820-1874) was a lawyer and procurator at the Supreme Court of the Dutch East Indies and from 1852 and editor of the Java Bode. This is the first edition of his translation of the Qur'an into Dutch, with his text drawing on previous editions of the Qur'an in translation (in various languages) by: Ludovico Marracci (1612–1700), Italian orientalist whose edition of the Arabic text of the Qur'an with a Latin Qur'anic translation first appeared in 1698; George Sale (1697–1736), an English lawyer and orientalist, whose English translation of the Qur'an, after Marracci's edition, first appeared in 1734; Baruch Löb Ullmann (1804–1843) orientalist and chief rabbi of Krefeld, whose German Koran translation first appeared in 1840; Albert Félix Ignace Kazimirski de Biberstein (1808–1887), a Polish-French translator, whose French translation of the Qur'an with a preface by Jean-Pierre Guillaume Pauthier (1801–1873) was first in 1840.

First edition, 8vo (230 x 130 mm); complete, [xiii, xlv, 666, v. pp.], two exlibris stamps to title, one early pencil inscription to upper margin of title, small chip to upper corner of half title, else internally clean and crisp condition; contemporary quarter cloth-backed boards, shelf label removed from spine, corners a little bumped.
