With a cover and layout designed by John Heartfield, Deutschland, Deutschland über alles is a powerful work of social and political criticism by Kurt Tucholsky (1890–1935), one of the most influential German-Jewish writers, journalists, and satirists of the Weimar Republic. Combining a profound affection for Germany with a sharp critique of its social and political climate in the late 1920s, Tucholsky used satire and incisive commentary to challenge militarism, nationalism, and growing anti-democratic tendencies. Above all, he warned of the rising threat posed by the Nazi movement and the danger it represented to German democracy.

His warnings proved tragically prophetic when Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. Soon thereafter, Tucholsky's books were among the first to be denounced as 'un-German,' and were banned and burned by the Nazi regime. Tucholsky himself became one of the first authors to have his German citizenship revoked.
