Vialla de Sommieres spent six years in Montenegro, circa1806-12, as governor of Cattaro, during the French occupation of Dalmatia in the Napoleonic wars. The only English edition of this work was published in Sir Richard Phillips' series New Voyages and Travels, is abridged and has only 8 plates and was without map, although one was mentioned on the title. This French edition is obviously of far more importance and value.

First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo, large folding map, hand-coloured in outline, 12 engraved hand-coloured plates, uncut and partly unopened in original blue marbled wrappers, paper labels (rubbed), a fine unsophisticated example, modern cloth box, morocco label.

Atabey 1286; Blackmer 1729; Weber 96.
