Fine first edition of this survey of Orissa (Odisha) by one of the great statisticians and compilers of India Sir William Wilson Hunter (1840-1900). Written in the aftermath of the 1866 famine in the region, claiming an estimated million lives, known colloquially as Na Anka Durvikhya.

First edition; 2 vols, 8vo (23.5 x 15.5 cm); 17 engraved plates including frontispieces, 1 of which coloured, 1 large folding map to front pocket, unopened, armorial bookplates to pastedowns; publisher's original purple cloth, gilt lettering to upper boards and spines, touch of fading to spines else a fine set.
