Thomson was an American Protestant missionary who lived in Syria for twenty five years and this is his best-selling account of his travels through the Middle East. It contains an interesting depiction of life in Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon in the nineteenth century under Ottoman rule.

This work was originally published in 1859. It is highly unusual to however find all three volumes in the same attractive decorative green cloth binding.

3 vols, 4to ( 23 x 18 cm), engraved frontispieces, publisher's advert at rear of one vol (Lebanon), numerous illustrations in text, maps, some folding, inner hinges in one volume slightly loose, some ephemera of the previous owner inserted loose in all three volumes; publisher's green gilt decorated cloth, some minor wear to corners and edges; overall a very good copy. pp. xx, 592, xix, 689, xxx, 711.
