The London to Birmingham railway opened in 1838 and was the first inter-city line to built into London. The Liverpool Manchester railway opened in 1830 and was the first intercity line in the world.
This scarce guide belonged to the Karl Baedeker publishing house.

Second edition., 8vo ( 15 x 10 cm), xiii, 179pp, 6pp publishers list to rear. large folding map of the railway and a folding plan ( both map and plan with reinforced tears), stamp on title-page; title-page; 36pp, folding general map torn in two, publisher's brown cloth gilt, slightly split along spine; cloth faded; otherwise a very good copy.
