With the rare index plate. 'An Embassy despatched in 1788 by the Nawab of Oudh, travelled in a huge convoy to meet Lord Cornwallis in Calcutta. Zoffany left Lucknow on horseback about two weeks after and, on catching it up, apparently witnessed some such scene as depicted here. The Ambassador and his entourage are barely visible in the distance and simply lend a title to the composition of a frenzied elephant' (Snelgrove).
