Krakiv [Krakow] & Lviv, Ukrains'ke vydavnytstvo, 1943
Kovzhun settled in Lviv in 1922 where he became a leading figure in the artistic community. In 1931 helped organise the Association of Independent Ukrainian Artists (ANUM), whose journal, Mystetstvo (Lviv), he edited (1932–6). His graphic art was displayed at exhibitions in Lviv, Warsaw, Prague, Brussels, Berlin, Rome, and Naples, and had a major impact on book graphics in Western Ukraine. Kovzhun ranks with Heorhii Narbut as the leading Ukrainian graphic artist of the 20th century. He was thoroughly modern and yet closely bound to Ukrainian artistic traditions. His early work was influenced by symbolism, futurism, and to some extent by Narbut, but after 1924 he developed his own style, which was at first expressionist and then constructivist.
'Hordynsky thought it was his moral duty to complete and publish a book about the life and work of Pavel Kovzhun, who was the closest and dearest person to him', B. Horyn writes in a monograph on Sviatoslav Hordynsky. He considered Kovzhun his teacher and close friend, with whom they were similar in their views on development of contemporary Ukrainian art.
First edition; 8vo (20.5 x 14.5 cm); illustrations throughout including some in colour; original printed brown boards with illustration pasted to upper cover, minor soiling, a very good copy.
