Richard Carmichael (1779-1849) was a prominent surgeon and medical reformer in Dublin, and assisted in the first operation to be perfumed under general anaesthesia in Ireland. 'He was well known for his research on cancer, scrofula, and particularly syphilis, for which he advocated the limited use of mercury' and the present text was his major publication on the subject (Dictionary of Irish Biography).
William Wadd (1776-1829) 'was a well-known and well-respected surgeon and writer. He was also a very good visual artist who made his own anatomical illustrations', and this volume on the bladder contains twenty-one of his etchings.
First editions; 4to; 4 tinted stipple engravings in the first volume, 21 etched plates and single leaf of publisher's ads in the second in the second, withdrawn ink stamp on the verso of the title to the first volume, contents foxed and tanned with some offsetting from the plates; late 19th-century half calf rebacked to style, black morocco labels, 5 raised bands, marbled sides, brown endpapers, Charing Cross Hospial Medical School bookplate, binding rubbed and scuffed, very good condition; 237 & 72pp.
