Enlarged by fifty percent from the first edition. Second edition of 'the first textbook on radioactivity, surveying contemporary knowledge of the entire field' (Dibner, 100 Books Famous in Science 51), by the physicist who both discovered the structure of the atom and was the first to split one.

'Research progressed so rapidly in this area that the second edition, published only a year later, had to be enlarged by fifty percent. The book includes a discussion of Rutherford's revolutionary transformation theory, developed during the period 1902-1903, which states that radioactivity is a by-product of the transformation of one element into another' (The Norman Library of Science and Medicine 1870).

Second edition; 8vo; 1 plate, 4 page publisher's ads at rear, ownership inscription, small ink stamp of the initials WD, and glue mark from removed news clipping on the front free endpaper, small clipping of Rutherford loosely inserted in the text, WD ink stamp and blind stamp of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History on the title,small stainin the gutter of pages 16 and 17, contents toned, spotting and offsetting of the endpapers; original green cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt, library shelf number partially removed from spine, cloth a little rubbed with some wear at the extremities, very good condition; 580pp.
