An Important Landmark in British Philosophy.. Sir Alfred Jules 'Freddie' Ayer 1910-1989, British philosopher known for his promotion of Logical Positivism, as newly developed by the Vienna Circle, particularly in this book and a subsequent one 20 years later, The Problem of Knowledge. In the former, Ayer presents the verification principle as the only valid basis for philosophy. He believed that unless logical or empirical verification is possible then statements such as 'God exists' or 'charity is good' are not true or untrue but meaningless. Needless to say such views made Ayer at age of 26 the 'enfant terrible' of British philosophy.

First edition, 8vo., publisher's blue cloth, gilt title to spine, still bright, printed cream dust-jacket, slightly rubbed and soiled with age-discolouration particularly to spine but overall sound and presentable.
