London, Printed for G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1824.
wide-margined edges uncut
The first and only edition in English of this early topographic survey of European vineyards, a wide-margined uncut copy in the original publisher's boards. Rare in commerce. With a useful glossary of terminology explaining the meaning of, for example, 'Cru' ('the land upon which the vine grows...'), 'Apre' ('wines, which by their roughness, cause a disagreeable sensation to the palate'), and 'Mache' ('A wine thick and clammy, which fills the mouth, and appears capable of being chewed').
'Jullien was born at Châlon-sur–Sâone in 1766 and died in Paris in 1832. He was a wholesale wine merchant in Paris and regularly visited the principal wine-producing districts of France... he obtained a vast amount of practical knowledge about the vineyards he visited, the different species of vines he saw and the different wines he tasted, and he made it a practice to write down everything that interested him: late on in life he undertook to visit most of the vine-growing districts of Europe, and even passed into Asia. In 1816, he published in Paris a book entitled "Topographie de tons les Vignobles Connus", which is of the highest interest because most of the information it contains is absolutely original' (Simon, pp6-7).
First edition in English; 12mo (20 x 12 cm); wide-margined uncut copy, slight spotting to endpapers and title; publisher's pale blue drab boards, original paper label to spine, edges uncut, minor wear, corners a little bumped, a very pleasing example; xvi, 248pp.
