A fine presentation binding demonstrating a gift from the Government of New South Wales to the former German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, Prince Bismarck (1815-1896). Although the presentation binding is not dated the album was no doubt created to mark the German Chancellor's 70th birthday, indeed The Times recorded on 2nd April 1885 (the Prince's 70th birthday) that 'Every room in the [Chancellor's] palace was literally piled full of birthday offerings of every conceivable kind, illuminated addresses, honorary diplomas, telegrams, and letters inumberable from all parts of the world'.
The 70 albumen prints were assembled for presentation, with the image the Argyle Cutting having been identified as circa 1872, and the statue of Captain Cook from 1879 or later. The subjects include: Princess Albert Statue, Government House, Colonial Secretaries Office, Australian Museum, Town Hall, Sydney University, St. Paul's College, St. John's College, Captain Cook's Statue, Botanic Gardens, Jenolan Caves, Argyle Cutting (by Charles Percy Pickering, c.1872, cf. State Library NSW), Double Bay, Naval Sham-Fight, The Detached Squadron, Saddle Cutting, G. S. Railway, Picton Viaduct, The Valley Blue Mountains, Menangle River, Vale of Avoca, Emu Plains, Coast Scene near Kiama, Fitzroy Falls, Knapsack Gully Viaduct, Katoomba Falls, Valley of the Grose, Trial Bay, Nepean River, Govett's River, Mount Victoria.
Landscape folio, (album 46 x 36.5 cm.) 70 albumen prints (each approximately 22.6 x 280 cm., or the reverse, 4 oval images with fine margins, mounted on card, recto and verso, each with a printed caption on the decorative mount, some titled in the negative, contemporary red morocco gilt, gilt edges, lightly rubbed, upper cover with gilt tooled presentation 'Photographs / New South Wales / for his Excellency Prince Bismarck / from / the Government of New South Wales'.
