Berthold Carl Seemann (1825-1871) was a German botanist and botannical collector who travelled widely. He became the botanist for the expedition of H. M. S. Herald (1845-1851) on the recommendation of Sir William Hooker and during the expedition, he collected many specimens along the western coast of North and South America. In the 1860s he then returned to Central and South America to study botany in greater detail. He eventually died in Nicaragua in 1871.
First edition, 8vo (16 x 13 cm), 20 chromolithographed plates including frontispiece; full contemporary calf gilt, spine richly gilt, red morocco label, raised bands, with fine marbled endpaper and matching edges; xvi, 359 pp, some very minor spotting to endpapers,very minor scratch to label; else a very good copy.
