The lithographic series, Quatre Lithographies, perfectly embodies Willem de Kooning's late style; which was characterised by simplified lyrical and rhythmic lines rendered in bright, primary colours. A key innovation in his studio at the time was a rotating easel, designed by his wife's brother, which allowed the artist access to every part of the canvas in one smooth rotation. This new development helped impart a fluid consistency across the surface, translating into a dynamic sense of movement as the viewer's eye travels across the painting or print. The lightness of de Kooning's line-making hint at the influence of Henri Matisse's style, whose joyous forms inspired de Kooning own expressive visual language. Works, such as the current series, from the artist's late period strike a skilful balance between structure and spontaneity, distinguished by their vibrant and gestural energy.

The complete set of four lithographs in colours on Arches wove paper, 1986, each signed and dated in pencil, numbered 51/100 from the edition of 100 (there were also 50 numbered with Roman numerals), in the original card portfolio case with text sheets, printed by Art Estampe, published by Editions de la Différence, Paris, each sheet 71 x 63.5 cm.
