Florence, Filippo I Giunta, October 1513.

Second Giocondo edition of Vitruvius' seminal work on architecture, the first to be published in the portable octavo format.

The text as prepared by Giovanni Giocondo of Verona was first published in Venice in 1511 by Giovanni Tacuino as the first illustrated edition of Vitruvius. Giocondo was himself an architect and engineer who worked on the new St Peter's in Rome after the death of Bramante. The woodcuts in this 1513 edition are reduced copies of those in the Venice edition, to which are added four new subjects. Cicognara considers this later edition to be the more correct.

Second illustrated edition; 2 parts in one volume, 8vo (16 x 10.3 cm); italic type, title within woodcut historiated border, 139 woodcut illustrations, decorative woodcut initials, printer's device on verso of final leaf, a few short closed marginal tears (not affecting text), scattered light finger-soiling, some light toning; contemporary blindstamped Italian morocco, restoration to spine ends and edges, slight rubbing to covers and extremities; collation: A-Z8 AA4 a-c8 A-C8; ff. [4], 187; 34 [i.e. 24], [24].
