The author, an officer in the Bengal Artillery, enjoyed a successful military career in India, until his demise at the siege of Lucknow in 1857. He had served in the Sikh Wars, and the present work, ostensibly a novel telling the tale of Colonel Belasis, employed in the service of Ranjit Singh, is accompanied by extensive notes concerning life in India and the Sikhs.
First edition; 8vo, [iv], iv, 275 pp., without the 'note by the publishers' sheet found in some copies, contemporary mauve cloth, neat repairs to joints, a very good copy.
