The privately printed true first edition. The rare privately printed edition, preceding the trade edition by twenty-one years. The text consists of six long letters, the first from Cairo in 1817, the last from Cyprus in 1818. They helped Belzoni excavate Abu Simbel, giving a good account of the excavation, and were amongst the earliest Europeans to visit Petra. The plan of Petra 'may be the first ever published' (Blackmer).
