One of the most important books on Persia. Dealing with every aspect of Persia, political, archaeological, cultural, etc., its great strength is its topographical section. As Ghani says, 'his powers of observation and analysis were extraordinary; no detail ever escaped him. His book can still be used as a topographical guide for travel in Iran.' Curzon also wrote many articles for the Times and other newspaper. He was highly regarded and became the country's most knowledgeable politician on Asiatic affairs.

Both volumes contain the signature of D.L.R. Lorimer who was Lieutenant-Colonel David Lockhart Robertson CIE (1876-1962), a member of the British Indian Army, a political agent in the British Indian government and notable linguist.

First edition; 2 vols, 8vo (23 x 15.5 cm); 43 plates, 10 maps (1 large folding at end), discreet contemporary owner's inscriptions to front endpapers and half-titles; publisher's original dark green cloth, gilt pictorial vignettes to upper covers, gilt lettering to spines, a few small nicks to cloth with one small pinhole to spine of vol. I, one small hole to lower board of vol. I, upper inner hinges a little weak, a very good copy with gilt still bright; xxiv, 639; xii, 653 pp.

Diba p.166; Ghani p.87; Wilson p.51.
