Real Life in Ireland was initially shunned by educated readers and even a quick glance at the language and misdeeds of the central characters, Brian Boru and Sir Shawn O'Doherty, reveals that such a publication might once have given offence. However, the work is in fact not unlike the works of Flann O'Brien and, although written nearly 200 years ago, is very readable and very funny.
First edition; 8vo; hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece by William Heath, 18 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Henry Alken and Heath, occasional light offsetting, light spotting to endpapers, else unmarked internally; 19th century full red morocco gilt, covers with triple gilt fillet, spine in 6 panelled compartments, gilt lettered direct to second, others richly gilt, raised bands, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers.
Abbey Life 282; Tooley 201.
