Richly illustrated record of all the Russian Empire monasteries subordinating to the Sinod Office at the beginning of XX century. The book was based on the extensive research of the published and unpublished historical records, as well as information and photographs provided by monasteries. Each record contains information on the history of a monastery, list of the important shrines preserved there, and its location. The monasteries are grouped by the provinces listed in the alphabetical order.

As the work was published just some years before the establishment of the communist rule, which often purposefully destroyed monasteries and shrines, it has a great value as a record of the vanished historical monuments and spiritual centres of the Imperial Russia.
