London, Printed for the Author, 1775

The Kinnaird copy, with the armorial bookplate of Lord Kinnaird to the front pastedown with his motto: 'patitur qui vincit'.

George, 7th Lord Kinnaird, succeeded his father to the title in 1767. After Cambridge he went into banking, counting the Prince of Wales as a customer, however Kinnaird fell out with the Prince who moved his business to Coutts & Co. which continues as bankers to the Royal Family today. Kinnaird was a great art collector, and bought many pictures from the Orleans Collection when it was dispersed in 1792. The collection was subsequently housed at Rossie Priory, built by his son. Kinnaird was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1784. He died on 11 October 1805, in Perth.

The annotations are translations of Portuguese verse printed in the text. They comprise some 86 lines of closely written text.

Books from the Kinnaird library are generally notable for their fine condition.

First edition, 4to, iv, 465, vii pp., large hand-coloured folding engraved map, 6 engraved plates, 2 double-page and folding, engraved tail-piece bearing the coat of arms of Spain, with annotations to 3E4, 3F1, 3G2, 3G4 and 3I1, repaired tear to map, contemporary tree calf, red morocco label, a fine copy.
