Robert Ball (1840-1913) was professor of astronomy at Trinity College, Dublin and then at Cambridge, and also a renowned speaker and popular author. 'His most popular books went through many editions; in particular, The Story of the Heavens (1885) had a new edition as late as 1950 and continued to provide inspiration to keen enquirers into astronomy' (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography).
First edition; 8vo; frontispiece and 10 plates of which 6 are colour, illustrations throughout the text, errata slip at page 196, undated single leaf and 16-page publisher's ads at rear, bookplate, both blanks lacking, frontispiece scratched, contents faintly toned with occasional light spots; original black cloth, titles to spine gilt, design of sun to upper board in gilt and red, cloth a little rubbed and marked with slight wear at the corners, a very good copy; 376pp.
