A smart, two-volume edition of the collected poems of Rabbie Burns (1759-1796), widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, bound in red pebble-rain morocco by Riviere.With provenance for the art collector John Sheepshanks (1787-1863), whose suit of over 500 oil paintings, drawings and sketches formed the nucleus of the collection still housed today at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
2 vols; 12mo (17 x 10.5 cm); wood-engraved portrait frontispiece after Alexander Nasmyth to vol. I and 11 wood-engraved plates, further wood-engraved in-text illutrations, bookplates to front pastedown and front free endpaper recto, without front blank, occasional spotting; 19th-century pebble-grain red morocco by Riviere, covers with double gilt fillet rules, gilt spine in 6 compartments, all edges gilt, spines slightly darkened, a little rubbed with minor wear, very good; [iii]-xlii, [43]-266; vi, [7]-270pp.
