The first comprehensive study of Roger Mayne's work, published to accompany an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum (26 February – 31 May 1986). Mayne photographed extensively in North Kensington around Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove between 1956 and 1961. He mainly worked in and around Southam Street W10, which was declared unfit for human habitation in 1963 and was largely demolished by 1969. Mayne and his photographs inspired Colin MacInnes' 1959 novel Absolute Beginners.

In 1977, Mayne presented the Victoria and Albert Museum with an album containing 88 photographs of Southam Street, which form the basis of this exhibition and catalogue.
