William Peter Hamilton (1867-1929) was editor of the Wall Street Journal from 1908 to 1929 and a leading proponent of the Dow Theory, a trend-following trading strategy which called for 'soulless barometers, prices indexes and averages to tell us where we are going and what we may expect' (p.4).

The Stock Market Barometer is advertised alongside other works on Dow Theory on the jacket of Harris Nelson's Commonsense Speculation (1938): 'This book... contains many reminiscences and sophisticated suggestions, all interesting to students of the price movement, and should be read by all those who may wish to become familiar with every authoritative work on the subject of Dow's theory'.
