Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Meccah and Medina.
Stock Code 120991
London, Mullan, 1879.
with a new preface
This edition is notable for the new preface containing Burton's reply to Palgrave's criticisms of the first edition, describing the hypocrisy of Palgrave (the first westerner into Riyadh) as 'Satan teaching against sin'.Burton was the first English Christian to enter Mecca freely as a true Mohammedan pilgrim (travelling in disguise as an Afghan Pathan) and the first European to travel between the Holy Cities by the eastern route. Burton had originally intended to cross the peninsula but was frustrated by fierce fighting among the interior tribes. He spent a month ant Medina before going on to Mecca where he performed all the rituals of the Hajj.
Third edition revised; 8vo (20 x 14 cm); folding frontispiece map, four plates (three folding), contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown; publisher's original gilt pictorial cloth, gilt lettering to spine, some discreet expert restoration, a fine copy; xvi, 518, 16 (ads.) pp.
